South Coast
South of Durban is one of the most sought after destinations in South Africa; the South Coast. At 93 miles length, it ranks from Amanzimtoti to Port Edwards, which is a resort town. There are magnificent, white beaches and the water is so warm that one can swim even in winter.
The leading holiday centers are Amanzimtoti, Umkomaas, Scottburgh, Park Rynie and Hibberdene. The region of the coast of Kwalazulu-Natal is also known as the Sunshine Coast. Between Hibberdeen and Mariana Beach, on the Hibiscus Coast, lie the tourist resorts Margate and Port Shepstone.
Margate, the beautiful resort, is friendly and welcoming, with various hotels, restaurants, bars and golf courses. In addition, here, the famous Hibiscus Festival is held every year. Aliwal Shoal is a paradise for avid divers, as one can enjoy the underwater world and discover corals and shipwrecks. Amanzimtoti is an enormous holiday resort with numerous high-rise apartments and about 300.000 visitors annually.
A reptile park, Croc World, is located between Umkomaas and Scottsburgh. There, travelers may watch professionals feed and swim with crocodiles, alligators and snakes. Port Shepstone, an industrial area, is a haven for water sport enthusiasts.
The Banana Express runs on Wednesdays and Fridays, at 10:00 am, from Port Shestone to Paddock station. Its purpose is, in fact, to transport bananas; however, the affable conductor also takes tourists on an interesting ride. On the train, one can see sugar cane and banana plantations, nature reserves and the stunning coastline.
The Umzimkulwana River has cut a 15 miles long gorge in the sandstone. Here, one can simply marvel at the panorama or use one of the three hiking trails. San Lameer is a must-visit place for golfers. In the picturesque resort, near Port Edward, one can enjoy a world-class golf course surrounded by stunning scenery. It is obvious that the South Coast of South Africa holds hidden treasures, which are worth seeing at least once.
