Dolphin (North) Coast
The main draw for most visitors to Dolphin Coast is the prevalent stretches of golden sand beaches. Willard Beach is the main swimming area and it is equipped with shark nets and a staff of life guards. Salmon Bay, to the south, is a popular surfing spot, while Ballito provides extensive opportunities for fishing. Dolphin Coast also offers a wide selection of accommodations, including many five star hotels.
Dolphin Coast is covered in sugar cane fields. While vacationing in South Africa, culinary enthusiasts should take the opportunity to visit a working sugar mill in Maidstone or Tongaat. Also, be sure to stop by the Morewood Memorial. This memorial rests on the site of South Africa's first sugar mill and commemorates the work of Sir Edmund Moorewood, the father of the South African sugar cane industry.
The Vineyard on Ballito is a luxury bed and breakfast located within minutes of the beach. Each suite is named for a renowned South African winery and features a gorgeous ocean view, satellite television and a bar fridge with complimentary snacks and drinks. Hotel Izulu was the first five star luxury hotel in Ballito.
It features 19 suites and five free standing villas. In addition, the hotel is home to Gigi's Restaurant, which serves world class modernized South African cuisine, and the Impilo Beauty Spa. The Salt Rock Hotel is situated on the shore of the Indian Ocean. Just north of Durban, it is a quiet and relaxed resort with secluded beaches and nearby sidewalk cafes and restaurants.
The facilities include a swimming pool, children's playground and two restaurants. Salt Rock specializes in family accommodations as well as rooms for business people and honeymooners, all of which offer an ocean view.
