Battlefields

The Battlefield Route, also known as road of the battlefield, is reminiscent of the long and bloody clashes between Zulus, British and the Boers in South Africa. The area includes more than 50 historically notable sites. They are stretched between the cities of Estcourt in the south, Dundee and Glencoe in the west, Ulundi in the east and Volksrust and Vryhed, in the north.

All battlegrounds are within a radius of 31 miles around the city of Dundee in a picturesque, harmonious mountain region. Although everything is quite close to each other, one should allow enough time, as the terrain is hilly and the roads full of gravel. Nearby is an excellent museum, which is open every day, as well as many hiking trails; leading all around the battlefields.

Approximately 6 miles from Rorke's Drift, lies the Fugitive Drift, where two British soldiers tried to save the British Empire flag from the clutches of the Zulus. On the banks of the Umfolozi River in Ulundi, the decisive battle between the British and the Zulus took place on July, 04, 1879.

17 miles from Dundee away is a place that travelers who are interested in the philosophy of the Voortrekkers should visit. There, the Blood River Monument shows 64 ox carts cast in bronze and original size. The Cairn was constructed by the Boers shortly after the battle to mark the center. The squad defeated 12.000 Zulu and the battle became extremely grave, as it pointed out that the Boers God's chosen people.

One can take part of organized tours of the battlefields, and check out the Isandlawana Museum, which is located in St. Vincent's, next to the former battleground. The battlefield region of South Africa offers lots of captivating facts and information, and the surrounding area provides for memorable holidays.
